🧮 Percent Change Formulas
Basic Formula
% Change = [(Final - Initial) ÷ |Initial|] × 100
Example: Initial = 100, Final = 150
[(150 - 100) ÷ 100] × 100 = 50% increase
Example: Initial = 100, Final = 75
[(75 - 100) ÷ 100] × 100 = 25% decrease
Reverse Calculation
Initial Value = Final ÷ (1 + %Change/100)
For increases: Final = 150, Change = +50%
150 ÷ (1 + 50/100) = 100
For decreases: Final = 75, Change = -25%
75 ÷ (1 - 25/100) = 100
Multiplier Method
Final Value = Initial × (1 + %Change/100)
For increases: Initial = 100, Change = +50%
100 × (1.5) = 150
For decreases: Initial = 100, Change = -25%
100 × (0.75) = 75
💡 Common Percent Change Examples
Scenario | Initial | Final | Change | Type |
---|---|---|---|---|
Stock price | $50 | $65 | +30% | Increase |
Temperature | 80°F | 68°F | -15% | Decrease |
Population | 1,000 | 1,200 | +20% | Increase |
Test score | 80 points | 72 points | -10% | Decrease |
💡 Percent Change Tips
- Positive result indicates an increase, negative indicates a decrease
- When initial value is negative, interpret results carefully
- For repeated changes, use multipliers (e.g., 10% increase then 10% decrease ≠ 0% change)
- Percent change is relative to the initial value (50 → 75 is +50%, 100 → 125 is +25%)
🧠 Formula
Percent Change =((New Value - Original Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100
🧮 Example
-
Original Value: 1,000
-
New Value: 850
-
👉 Percent Change =
((850 - 1000) ÷ 1000) × 100 = -15%
✔️ So, the value decreased by 15%.
